A broad shouldered Reed Richards stands upon an unknown platform surrounded by what seems to be deep space. His facial expression is blank as his words make their way out sternly to the great unknown.
"My whole life I have faced great evil but never have I seen anything of this magnitude. My hands are tied and for the first time I think perhaps our mistakes have caught up to us. Time is running out and we are in dire need of a team who is able to comprehend what is at stake and put all personal relationships aside. This is why I have arranged this meeting with you. I'm afraid the close bond of the Fantastic Four is a weakness in this situation and the unthinkable things I will have to do to save this world may just tear my family apart. I'm asking that you give me a set amount of time to put together the best plan of action along with a team that would be most suited to prevent this bleak future from happening."
The unknown platform shifts up lifting Reed higher. We now see that the purple platform is a single finger of the mighty Galactus' hand. He lifts Reed making eye contact with the Earth's smartest man.
"I grant life, I do not grant time. Your planet is the starting point for the destruction of the world and you ask me for more time?"
Reed's voice booms equally as he looks at the giant figure standing in front of him.
"There is no problem that can not be fixed. There are several precautions we can take to alter our fate. Call it the butterfly effect if you will. I can project the probability of an alternate future for the fate of the Galaxy if given a few extra days. You have my word that I will do what I must to ensure the safety of the world however, you must understand that I have to try to protect the ones that I love also. This is all I ask of you Please allow me to use my gifts to help everyone of both sides of the spectrum."
The rumble of Galactus' voice seems to shake space itself as he thunders his response back to Reed Richards.
"Very well Richards..I will grant you 168 hours No more and no less. If a solution is not found by then I will have no choice but to devour your planet for the safety of others. Do we have a deal?"
Reed's words came out slow and short. He was signing the Earth's fate without any permission and this would only be the first of many horrible things he would have to do to prevent a future consisting of a hero Civil War. With a heavy heart he uttered the fate of his planet.
"We have an agreement. If you will excuse me I'm afraid I don't have any time to waste."
The mighty Galactus calls out to Reed once more.
"Make haste Richards. This is your last chance"
With that Reed is transported back to the confines of the Baxter Building. He stands in the darkness of his kitchen knowing that desperate times will always call for desperate measures. The sound of a light switch is heard as the bright lights of the hallway quickly follow. Johnny Storm with a beer in hand makes his way into the room pausing to look at Reed.
"Reed! what's up!? uhm...you alright? You look like you've seen a giant ghost."
"Everything's fine Johnny. It's 3 A.M. you should be in bed."
"Ah come on! Sleep is for old people! This guy is gonna keep the party going all night!"
With a sigh Reed simply nodded in defeat having already wasted enough time with his care free brother-in-law. He begins to walk away but not before pausing in mid stride to ask the Human Torch a brief question.
"say...Johnny, Would you ever consider doing battle with an unstoppable being? Like maybe.... a God?"
Johnny gulps the rest of his beer down letting a well timed belch out. In no more than 5 seconds his answer comes out.
"I guess. We've done it before. Remember when we put the smack down on ol' Galactus That guy is long gone and it's all because of us. There's nothing the human torch can't handle and you 3 are alright sometimes too. Why? Are we going to fight a giant God hell bent on destroying the world!? I call shotgun this time! Ben's giant rock head is always in the way when I'm in the back of the fantasticar..."
Reed chuckled slightly continuing to walk off to his lab as he called back to Johnny.
"No Johnny...I'm afraid there's no such thing as Gods when you are a man of science."
